Predicted GNSS Ephemeris

Previously marketed as GPStream™ PGPS, the predicted GNSS ephemeris service is a solution designed to substantially enhance the satellite acquisition performance of virtually any GNSS positioning engine, whether a chipset or next-generation software-GNSS. In practical terms, this means a reduction of Time-To-First-Fix from 45 seconds to 2 seconds or less. Moreover, fixes can be achieved in difficult environments where they were previously impossible.

pgps_system_500hThe predicted GNSS ephemeris solution works on any mainstream mobile operating system as well as proprietary embedded platforms, and can seamlessly adjust its performance if the device has full, occasional, or no network access at all. The solution consists of a lightweight and patented software client that enables the device to generate its own GNSS assistance data, i.e. extended ephemeris. Extended ephemeris is a close approximation of the real broadcast ephemeris constantly transmitted by the satellites, which must normally be received by the device before it can start calculating its position.

The predicted GNSS ephemeris solution preloads extended ephemeris data into the GNSS chipset, thereby avoiding the latency and higher bandwidth usage inherent in real-time Assisted-GNSS approaches. The net result is super fast satellite acquisition and improved GNSS sensitivity. In other words, a better user experience when consuming Location-Based Services.

We work closely with leading GNSS chipset vendors to ensure full interoperability with our predicted GNSS ephemeris solution. Among others, these include several platforms from Intel/ST-Ericsson, Intel/Infineon, Marvell, ST Microelectronics and Texas Instruments. For OEM device vendors working with multiple chipset platforms or even multiple OS, such as Android, Windows Phone or custom, our solution provides a uniform and simple way to implement Extended Ephemeris support.

Innovative Dual-Mode Operations

The philosophy behind the design of our predicted GNSS ephemeris solution was to reduce or eliminate the dependency on network-based servers for Extended Ephemeris access. Extended Ephemeris is all about being able to predict the future positions of satellites for days, even weeks into the future. Traditional approaches carry out these predictions on servers and large files (50-80Kb per GNSS per week) must be downloaded by devices. We challenged this view and patented a unique and innovative way to perform these predictions right on the mobile device. Our approach requires less than 2Kb per GNSS per week when connected, and it also runs autonomously when not connected (e.g. when roaming). The yields a most consistent user location experience across all use case scenarios.
